Towards Water-Wise Cities: the IWA principles

IWA

Cities are rapidly expanding and they cannot function without water, a resource under increasing pressure.

The IWA’s (International Water Association) Principles for Water Wise Cities aim to provide the necessary frameworks and principles to assist urban leaders to develop and implement their vision for sustainable urban water, and resilient planning and design in their cities. The ultimate goal of these Principles is to encourage collaborative action, underpinned by a shared vision, so that local governments, urban professionals, and individuals actively engage in addressing and finding solutions on urban water management challenges.

Cogeneration in the UK: an efficient solution

Cogeneration is the most efficient way to meet heat and power needs, cutting energy waste by up to 30%.

There are more than 2,000 businesses and sites in the UK which use CHP to support their operations. More than 111,000 jobs are located on these sites and CHP is helping to improve manufacturing productivity, control energy costs and protect long-term employment. CHP is also used by hundreds of heat networks, providing heating through a network of pipes to homes and businesses in UK cities. New CHP plants ensure flexibility and efficiency: they are able to respond to market signals, providing more generation when needed and less when lower carbon generation is available. Furthermore, CHP saves carbon as long as it displaces other, higher carbon gas and coal power stations which do not recover their heat.

A Scottish project aims to promote the uptake of residential CHP on the Outer Hebrides islands.

Housing agency Tighean Innse Gall, Lews Castle College of the University of Highlands and Islands and Finland’s University of Oulu have joined forces to develop a project, which aims to promote the uptake of residential combined heat and power (CHP) on the Outer Hebrides islands.

The project will look at remote households’ heat and power needs. The partners plan to design and manufacture an affordable 20 kWth/3-6 kWe micro-CHP system that will run on locally-sourced solid biomass, and to set up trial systems across the region.

Good practice guidelines for water data management policy

During the 28th UN-Water Meeting held in Rome, the Good Practice Guidelines for Water Data Management Policy is officially launched.

These good practice guidelines are intended for officers responsible for formulating and implementing government strategy to improve water information, with the aim of improving water policy, planning, management and operations.

The themes discussed are: identify different types of water data and their uses; prioritize water management objectives; strengthen water data institutions; establish sustainable water data monitoring systems; adopt water data standards; and implement effective water data information systems. Making the case for water reform globally, the Guidelines highlight the growing risk posed by deteriorating water security, due to a combination of factors that include rapid population growth and industrialization, over-extraction, widespread pollution and climate change.

More than 200 million European households will have smart meters in 2023

The report “Smart Metering in Europe”, from Berg Insight, analyses the latest developments for smart metering (electricity and gas) in Europe.

This market has reached a stage of early maturity and more than 200 million European households will have smart meters in 2023.

Almost 40 percent of the 281 million electricity customers in EU had a smart meter at the end of 2017, a share that is set to increase to 70 percent over the coming five years. Annual shipments of smart electricity meters will reach a peak of around 28 million units per year in 2019/2020.

The majority of the new installations will take place in France, Spain and the UK, with significant contribution also coming from Austria and the Netherlands. After Italy, which had a head-start, Spain was the first major country in Western Europe to begin mass deployments at the start of this decade.

France and the UK have started to ramp up the rate of installations, which will peak at an aggregate level of 10–12 million units per year in the period 2018–2020.

World Water Day 2018: watch the video!

The World Water Day, on 22 March every year, focuses attention on the importance of water.

The theme for World Water Day 2018 is ‘Nature for Water’ – exploring nature-based solutions to the water challenges we face in the 21st century. Damaged ecosystems affect the quantity and quality of water available for human consumption. Today, 2.1 billion people live without safe drinking water at home; affecting their health, education and livelihoods.

Sustainable Development Goal 6 commits the world to ensuring that everyone has access to safe water by 2030, and includes targets on protecting the natural environment and reducing pollution.
